The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That
Whenever a major honors show nears, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
